Executive function vs. IQ: what actually predicts school readiness
Here's a genuinely surprising finding from child-development research: a set of skills called executive function predicts how a child does in school more reliably than IQ does. Not instead of intelligence mattering at all — but as a stronger, more consistent signal on its own. And unlike IQ, executive function is something a young child can visibly get better at with practice.
What executive function actually is
It's not one skill — it's three, working together, and every parent has watched all three in action without necessarily naming them:
